Dome City Blues

Dome City Blues - Jeff Edwards Really good read. The world is a mess due to pollution and more (what's new?) People are jacked into the net through implants, similar to cyberpunk novels. Add in a dash of Film Noir detectives, a war hero back story, and the ubiquitous "hooker with a heart of gold. Tie it together with lost love and you have Dome City Blues.

It's hard to believe that this was originally written in the early 90s!

Control Alter Delete: UK English Edition

Control Alter Delete: UK English Edition - Stella Whiteman I really liked this book! I can't go into too much detail without ruining it for you, but it's set in the near future. Big Brother is acceptable to most, but then people go missing.

If you want a dystopian fix, maybe not. If you want to see what may happen, go for it!

Hopebreaker

Hopebreaker - Dean F. Wilson You can forget the backstory for much of the time; it's a steampunk romp about a ragtag bunch of rebels against an evil empire (ish) trying to disrupt a supply of chems.
Beware: It's the first on a series. It's left very much hanging for you to make a new purchase ... should you want to see what happens to the characters. Me? I can take it or leave it.

Wicked Good Witches Three Book Box Set (Demon Street Blues, Alpha Knows Best, Bye Bye Bloodsucker)

Wicked Good Witches Three Book Box Set (Demon Street Blues, Alpha Knows Best, Bye Bye Bloodsucker) - Starla Silver Second time I've tried this book. Upon reading the overly done sentence about pumping the clutch to start a bike I decided enough is enough. Life's too short to read a book you don't like

The Descent Series: Vol.1

The Descent Series: Vol.1 - S.M. Reine I read this trilogy as a single book. A bit of a slog, but generally worth it. The stories follow on. They are stand-alone to some extent, but you need the back story (and I've since found the other boxset on amazon should be read first). There is a minor cliffhanger to link to the next in the series, too.
I'm thinking about the next ones, but really hoping they will be combined in "volume 2" with a subsequent "good deal"!

Death by Pink Flamingo

Death by Pink Flamingo - Elisabeth Crabtree Sorry. I waited until the murder but I wasn't really bothered about who did it:(

The Hollar House

The Hollar House - Ashley Drake, Nicole Cross A nice short tale of a woman who moves into a haunted house to help a spirit move on. There is a degree of will they/won't they tension in the tale. Let's just say they do. Several times. With semi-tasteful detail. The book could survive without this addition, but it doesn't ruin it either.

Life is a Beautiful Thing: (Book Three) (Cyberpunk Science Fiction Series)

Life is a Beautiful Thing: (Book Three) (Cyberpunk Science Fiction Series) - Harmon Cooper The third in the series and, from the start, I should say I received a free copy of this book.

This story is much easier to follow than the first one, perhaps due to the fact Meme doesn't spend so much time out of his head. Or it could just be that I am used to the style now. I'm not going to give away the plot, but it concerns the usual protagonists - Yes; you do need to read the first two for it to make sense - and a few twists on what you'd expect.

On the whole a very enjoyable and reasonably short read. There are some formatting errors, but this may have happened during the conversion to Kindle format. However, a couple of times the author had a correct spelling for a different word (steal instead of steel, IIRR). Then there was "wallah" at one point; I'm prepared to accept this as a corruption of "voila" at the time the story is set (generous to a fault) but it did grate on me!

That said, I would recommend this to anyone who has read the first books in the series.

How to Puzzle Cache

How to Puzzle Cache - Cully Long I think this will live permanently on my "currently-reading" shelf!
A great insight into puzzle caches and, along with some of the recommend websites it should help remove some of those blue question marks from the map!

Don't Point that Thing at Me

Don't Point that Thing at Me - Kyril Bonfiglioli I saw this in a real bookshop and it was one of the recommended reads from The Management. "Bertie Wooster meets ".
I was intrigued, but not enough to pay the full paper price, so a Kindle purchase it was. I wish I hadn't bothered. The story is OK (art thief gets caught up in all sorts of trouble) but the style was the problem in my opinion. Phrasing and phrases from other languages left me wondering what was going on, especially as the dictionary and wikipedia apps on the Kindle didn't help (Before you ask; yes I do have an education!). It only goes to show that only Wodehouse could write like Wodehouse.
The end of the book was a bit of a let down, too. Not going to spoil it, but it seemed rushed.
The rest of the series? I thing I will avoid it like a jolly plague of aunts (sic), what?

Monsters, Magic, and Machines (The SteamGoth Anthology)

Monsters, Magic, and Machines (The SteamGoth Anthology) - Jonathan Baird, Bruce Blackistone, John Raposa The two stars reflect the two tales I enjoyed. One was about a demon on an airship ("The Curse of the Cygnus"), the other was about a lass from the 21st Century taken into an alternative reality.
The others? Some of the authors ought to be told that there are other punctuation marks besides full stops. Rambling sentences that are really paragraphs. Another uses "thru" and "Dr's" instead of "through" and "doctor's". This laziness meant I refused to read further.
Some of the stories had promise, but not lived up to.

I would happily read further adventures of the ones mentioned in the first paragraph. Besides those; no thanks.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane: A Novel

The Ocean at the End of the Lane: A Novel - Neil Gaiman, Neil Gaiman I remember this being the "Book at Bedtime" on Radio 4... I also remember falling asleep during it. That's no fault of the book! It was a fantastic read and, due to my ability to fall asleep, a twisty turny tale. It jumps about a bit at times, but this all adds to the charm. I saw this on a list of "books you must read" and totally agree.

Cached Out

Cached Out - Russell Atkinson Much longer than I'd normally read, but a good tale nevertheless. It is acronym heavy in places, but the unwitting discoverer of bodies is exFBI and the rest of the main characters are either law enforcement or military. The book takes the reader through twists and turns, taking routes into other crimes that are solved before returning.
The only thing that I thought could have been better was the ending. The happy ending we expected was there, but then went away again (vague, but no spoilers!)

Bad Spirits

Bad Spirits - D.V. Berkom Jumped around too much for me. She safe; no she isn't; now she's safe ...

Didn't feel like reading the others in this "anthology"

Amy Maxwell & the 7 Deadly Sins (Amy Maxwell Series Book 2)

Amy Maxwell & the 7 Deadly Sins (Amy Maxwell Series Book 2) - Heather Balog Another in the unlikely life of a busy mum who attracts trouble. Once again she finds herself in a heap of trouble, with death being a definite possibility. As it is the second book in the series a lot of the characters and situations are assumed, so it's not really one to start the series with.

Recommended.

Death Takes A Trip (Julia Blake Cozy Mystery Book 5)

Death Takes A Trip (Julia Blake Cozy Mystery Book 5) - Gillian Larkin A quick read and a free book. It is the first in the series that I've read, but that didn't make much of a difference. The characters were not very well developed in the story, but that could be a result of it being book 5. The plot was OK, with an unexpected twist in the end.
