Better Off Dead, Book 1 & Playing Dead, Book2 : Fae-Ever Dead Series

Better Off Dead, Book 1 & Playing Dead, Book2 : Fae-Ever Dead Series - Claire Grimes Not bad. Reads a bit like a toned down version of the other reaper books I've read (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16082905-graveyard-shift for instance), with a twist. However, cliff hangers at the end of each book do NOT mean people will automatically want to read the next one.

Space Kat

Space Kat - John Cosper It's not a bad book. Once you get going it rambles along like a typical space opera. There is a major spoiler twist in the tale, but not the sort of deal breaker that some think they should be.

A quick read with little brain stretching required.

The Revenant

The Revenant - Michael Punke Not seen the film. The book was cheap! I started reading this then wondered how it could be turned into a hollywood epic. Apparently it wasn't; it is loosely based on the book, which is a fictionalised true story.
We know from the start that the protagonist is injured. The rest of the tale covers events leading up to the event and then the repercussions. It races along in some areas, but gets bogged down at times - loads of history and backstories! The only bit I didn't really get on with was the ending. It didn't actually seem to end!
Not the sort of book I'd normally read, but it was the right price and I'm glad I read it.
Now; do I see the film or not?

Love and Robotics

Love and Robotics - Rachael Eyre The story just DRAGS. It's got a fine basic premise, but I'm at ten hours to go (and I'm a fairly fast reader) and I just can face any more.
So here's my new ending.
Josh goes for a walk in the rain. He goes rusty. Dorothy and Toto rescue him and go on an adventure.

21 Steampunk Coloring Pages: A Newfangled Adult Coloring Book: Downloadable Coloring Sheets for Stress Relieving Enjoyment and Creative Recreation - Newfangled Coloring Some good images, but the print quality is variable. Some seem to have artefacts from the scanning of the original. At the price it's OK; any more and I would be requesting a refund

A Ten Year Old's Guide to Owning a Spaceship

A Ten Year Old's Guide to Owning a Spaceship - S Cassley A present for my daughter's Kindle ... at least it was free. Rae reads *anything* and *everything* but she hated this book. The main character's name kept changing. The typos and lack of consistency with capitals were annoying. Rae even apologised for not liking a book she had been given!

Not recommended.

To Rescue General Gordon

To Rescue General Gordon - J.P. Medved My daughter speaks...

This book is a really excellent short story, because the plot is quite simple and straight to the point, the author does not get too carried away with the armaments on the HMS Pegasus, thereby keeping it in with the military capabilities of the Victorian army.

But, please J.P Medved, can I know what led to the events in the book?

Moon Over Soho

Moon Over Soho - Ben Aaronovitch I loved this book. It is a stand alone story but a lot of it relies on knowing the background from book 1. A little more "adult" in places, but it is part of the story. Anyway, it's not a kids book!
The only problem is that, like all addictive items, it leaves you looking for the next one. Time to hit Amazon up for another in the series.

A Dead Red Oleander

A Dead Red Oleander - R.P. Dahlke I missed book 2 in the series (due to it not having the £0.00 price tag!) but I hadn't really missed any essential plot. The story wanders along in a similar vein to the first. Characters have moved on as expected. New people have their own secrets... essential to the story, so not spoilers being added. OK, just one; everything turns out right in the end!

Angel City Blues

Angel City Blues - Jeff Edwards Although in the same series as Dome City Blues it has a different flavour. Much of the action takes place off-world, with a manga-esque ending that has a touch of Deus ex Machina about it. What a shame there don't appear to be any others in the sries

Edge of Mercy (Young Adult Dystopian)(Volume 1) (The Mercy Series)

Edge of Mercy (Young Adult Dystopian)(Volume 1) (The Mercy Series) - C. C. Marks I startedreading this to see if it was suitable for my daughter, but decided she was probably a bit young for it. Nevertheles, I continued through the tale. Although "Star" became "Starr" a couple of times the proof reading wasn't too bad. I just didn't like the characters. Also the story reads as the start to the sequel. Edge of Mercy stands alone, but there is an obvious follow on. The cause of the zombie plague isn't given, but could be in the next book. I don't know. I doubt if I'll continue with this series. SciFi zombies (or "Draghouls") a better in Boneshaker or similar.

The Happy Housewife

The Happy Housewife - Kate Cooch Not a bad story - woman stumbles across a 60s eco-terrorist group and brings them to justice.
The reason I'm dropping a star is that it tends to ramble in places. The author also writes history books and this becomes obvious. The history adds background and is interesting ... but it just goes on for too long. I found myself skimming some of this book, just looking for where the story picked up again.

A fairly good tale, let down by wandering into history (IMHO)

Rivers of London

Rivers of London - Ben Aaronovitch I really enjoyed this, so much so that I have bought the next in the series. Basically a not to good newbie cop finds he has a "talent". Cue Twilight Zone music, a mysterious Master (no; not that one) and a serial killer from YEARS back. Add a bit of water (but I'm not telling you any more about this) and it's a great tale.

I would never have known about this series if it hadn't been a specialist subject on Mastermind.

A Dead Red Cadillac

A Dead Red Cadillac - R.P. Dahlke A nice Sunday read. Lots of characters, and a bit confusing at times. Many plot twists, and the obligatory romantic nonsense common to these books.

Recommended, at the right price!

Blowing Off Steam #1 - When It Rains It Pours

Blowing Off Steam #1 - When It Rains It Pours - Ethan Russell Erway It starts off as little house on the prairie. Then a stranger walks in to help. An attempted attack; a shooting; a demonic monster; cowboy robots - killed by a robot kid. And finally a steampunk workshop.

Then nothing.

It just grinds to a halt and no sign of any follow up.

The Sweet Dreams Bake Shop (A Sweet Cove Mystery Book 1)

The Sweet Dreams Bake Shop (A Sweet Cove Mystery Book 1) - J.A. Whiting It had promise ... at least as much as many of these cozy mysteries have. Then the story started. It will come as no surprise that someone dies and the lead in the tale is a suspect. However, she doesn't bravely solve the case. No. The cat does. And her weird "internal humming" helps.
Honestly, some of the scene set ups have more depth than the characters. We can have loads about the cakes, the clothes, the cat even; I don't remember much about any of the characters!

Sorry, but not a series I will continue to read.

YMMV
