Another classic I'd heard of but not read. Once you get into the style it's good going, although it's not a light read. The circumstances the main protagonist finds herself in are only hinted at as the book progresses. Then the end of the book is open ended, leaving the reader to wonder if there is a "happy ending".
I say "end of the book"; there is a sort of appendix titled Historical Notes, but I didn't read this properly. It didn't seem to add anything to the narrative, although I may go back to it later.
